A Whole Big Nation of Week Three

Most Enjoyable
As much as I’d like to say that Texas beating an SEC team before A&M did, in all reality, more thrilling to me was USC losing to Stanford for the 4^th year in a row.

 

 

Least Enjoyable
This was the first week I got a good look at Notre Dame’s helmets.  And they FREAK. ME. OUT.

Point of Interest
Geno Smith was 34-of-39 for 411 yards and five touchdowns against JMU.  Hmmmm.  Marshall and JMU may not have been the SAT’s of opponents for West Virginia, but thus far in the season, most teams have not reached the depths of their schedules.  I’m interested to see how the Mountaineers roll the rest of the season

Putting On Big Boy Pants
TCU got their first whiff of the Big 12 this week, beating Kansas on the road.  Congrats for your first conference win!  While I am of the mind that a win is a win, I do wonder if TCU is getting a little anxious about conference play really getting underway…?  Three ugly turnovers in the redzone and a slight dip in the polls after beating Kansas, who is undeniably 10^th place out of the 10 Big 12 teams.   Gary Patterson found the silver lining in a lackluster performance by delivering the most faux-humble statement of the week:

 "The good thing is we didn't have a spectacular day and we found a way to win. We played hard. We just didn't play with a lot of focus and inspiration."

 

40 Acres of Week Three

Who’s a Big Boy? 
 David Ash so far this season?  7 TD’s, 0 INT’s.  That’s a statistic I enjoy.   He’s finally looking like he’s all grows up – even though the Old Miss Defense isn’t exactly tops of the SEC, he seemed to be taking his time (or at least being allowed to) and getting it done.   

Run Goodwin, Run!
Marquise was gold medal fast on Saturday night.  I will gladly give him all the gold medals and trophies I won playing flip cup, if he will play like that every week.

Strangers in the Grove…
I enjoyed seeing some new and strange names out there on the field.  I won’t point them out, because I don’t want anyone to feel bad, but a couple of times I had to look at my program and chase down a name.  Mack, formerly notorious for not playing his youngsters and/or anyone that wasn’t on his super-secret list, is mixing it up.  My only complaint?  Don’t let Brown run it 18 million times for 99 yards then let someone else take it in for the TD.

Happy the Man the Scores Fall On
Mack was looking loose and happy out there….reminiscent of the days when his boy VY was on the roster.   Of course, when you’re winning, it’s a little easier to look happy than when it’s the other way around…I’m not complaining.  Happy Mack, happy wife.  Wait –

I’d Trade Magic Beans For…
A little more confidence in our pass defense.  I know we had some great picks, but we also had two (technically three) bombs get way very very far away from us.   Let’s do that nonce more.

 

 

 

The Second Week

Most Enjoyable

I found most of the weekend to be enjoyable.  I’m gonna say…watching Oklahoma State lose to Arizona was pretty satisfying.  I like Big 12 Teams to be undefeated when we beat them, but there was something very enjoyable about seeing the Cowboys lose after that disgusting stunt they pulled with Savannah State the week before.

Least Enjoyable

Having to listen to the creepy, Aggie logic that the two players suspended for the 1^st game, which was a hurricane re-schedule for October 13^th with Louisiana Lafayette, are still suspended for the Louisiana Lafayette game.   Ta-a-cky.   Don't get me started on their new "national championships"...

 

Point of Interest

Speaking of Savannah State….they beat the spread when the game against Florida State, who was favored by 70, was called in the third quarter due to weather.  The score was 55-0, and I think God just had had enough….You go, God!

Putting On Big Boy Pants

If OSU hadn’t been so craptastically craptastic in their season opener, the A&M loss to Florida would have been my favorite moment of the week.  In their season…and, note, SEC opener, they blew a double digit half-time lead and lost, at home. So many things are right about that sentence.  Mostly I’m just hoping this makes them take down those ridiculous “THIS IS SEC COUNTRY” billboards they’ve put all over Dallas and Austin.  Tee hee.

Who’s a Big Boy?

Our Defense.  I know they weren’t perfect, but they looked much better.  And as crappy as it sounds to say it, I like shutting out teams.  Even if they are New Mexico.

Run, Gray, Run!

The crowd was waiting and waiting and waiting patiently to see Jonathan Gray get out there and make some magic.   While I wasn’t blown away, I did feel some excitement about our running game in general…both the starters and the starters of the future.

Happy the Man that Completes Passes

Ash, God Bless Him, he’s doing so much better and looking so much more confident.  I hope we (and by we, I mean Mack Brown and the collective offensive coaching staff) are learning some lessons about empowering quarterbacks.
